Jacob’s journey through the dark history of the comic book industry continues in this issue as the plan to take back the pages Hal’s daughter sold requires the pair to bring in someone with the skills necessary to pull off a heist.

Jacob decides to bring in his old friend Ricky Lawless, son of Teeg Lawless to get the three of them into the apartment of the man who has them. In the midst of their planning and its ultimate execution, Jacob continues to recount his checkered history with his mentor.

After pulling off the home invasion, they don’t find what they are looking for. Dejected, the three of them go drinking and both Jacob and Ricky convince the comic legend to attend the awards ceremony in his honor and tell everyone what he really thinks.

In typical fashion, all hell breaks loose and we find out that Jacob is hiding something. He knows more about the events than he let on and he knows exactly where the missing pages ended up.

Ed Brubaker takes this story to an interesting and surprising conclusion. Through the narration and dialogue, he weaves the mystery to a satisfying conclusion with a twist that I didn’t see coming, but enjoyed seeing unfold.

Sean Phillips does great work with the art and continues a film noir style that is very atmospheric.
