The Rundown: Frank Castle has returned to his past to tell his past self about his adventures and hopefully help him escape his fate and lose his family. Posing as his Uncle Fredo, he’s lured into the garage for a friendly beer only to be attacked by his past self who wants answers.
After an intense brawl, the two stop long enough for Cosmic Ghost Rider to tell him about the time he ended up in the past working with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate a HYDRA stronghold and rescue Captain America. It’s a harrowing adventure that is designed to showcase heroism and the difficulty in transitioning back into the world from war. It’s also guaranteed to tick off the Watcher.
The Story: Paul Scheer and Nick Giovannetti take a light tone with this issue and the intensity of Frank as a character is tempered by the presence of Cosmic Ghost Rider. It’s interesting to see the contrast between the two characters and the story itself is interesting and entertaining. There are some moments that feel a little too jokey, but they work with the tone of the issue. I really enjoyed that there are some consequences to Frank’s actions coming and look forward to seeing what he’s doing to Marvel history itself.
The Art: Todd Nauck has an interesting and fun style that feels a little out of place for Frank, but works well for the tone of this story and issue. The panels of Frank back in World War II are great looking, especially with the pseudo-newsprint style of the pages.
