The Rundown: Shahidah El-Amin and Ling Hua must work together to escape a mystical cave.

Shahidah and Ling have a series of adventures while trying to find the Cauldron of Eternal Life. The two also have a deep discussion where Ling reveals her motives for working with Margul Khan. Shahidah offers her assistance with Ling’s troubles, but the former has a plan of her own to enact. Afterwards, the duo makes a heroic escape. However, they soon find themselves in an even more precarious situation.

The Story: The penultimate chapter in this series is both action packed and enlightening. I enjoy the dynamic between Shahidah and Ling. They make a great team and have a solid rapport. Although they are constantly at odds with each other, I would be interested in reading about more of their adventures. I appreciate the historical context of this series, and the care that was taken in its crafting. I highly suggest reading the “Compass Points” at the end of the issue. There the authors discuss the references made in the tale.

The Art: The illustration in this episode are done in a traditional style. As most of the adventure takes place in the dark, the color palate heavily features deep blue and purple tones. The attention to detail provides a transportive experience for the reader. And an emphasis on character form and expression creates an emotional connection to the characters.
