In the Hollywood Hills Tandy Bowen aka Dagger is getting ready to help a strike team take down a suspected drug kingpin and her enforcers. Waiting in the shadows, watching is Tyrone Johnson aka Cloak.

Cloak provides the narration of this issue as he watches her from the shadows, protecting her without letting her know that he’s there. He looks back on who they were together and what they did and his memories are a little sad in context to being heroes. His point of view is interesting in how he sees what he did during that time and what they meant as a team. Apparently Tandy has broken off their working and personal relationship and Tyrone is not taking it well, but he is respecting her wishes to a degree.

Tandy takes over the narration and her point of view is one of trying to prove herself as a hero without Tyrone. She seems to be seeking more balance in her life and one that isn’t bound to someone else. She wants her space and this is how she is going to rediscover who she is. She is sure that she doesn’t need Tyrone. That she needs to move on. It’s interesting to see her in this light. Her determination is noble and works for her and she is right about what she feels she needs. Unfortunately, what she discovers might make her next encounter with Tyrone awkward.

The separation between both characters is a little jarring for someone used to the dynamic between the two of them, but what makes this work is that, on their own, we get a better sense of who they are as individual characters. This was a good first issue that lays out the characters, their conflicts and what lies ahead for Cloak and Dagger both personally and professionally. It will be interesting to see where this story goes as this first issue seems to be pitting these two against each other more than they seem to be.
