Steve Rogers is finally going to realize that “all enemies foreign and domestic” are more than just words as the scope and plans of the Power Elite begin to come into focus.

As we discover just how deep the rabbit hole goes in relation to who is working with and for the Power Elite, Steve Rogers has other things on his mind. Namely, he hears the screams of Sharon Carter as he fights his way through the hidden base and into a pitched battle with Taskmaster. The two go head to head, neither giving nor gaining ground until Steve finds an opening to exploit and gives the mercenary a lesson in improvisation.

When Rogers finally reaches Sharon, he frees her just in time but loses Alexa and Selene in the process. As the bigger picture of what is happening and the public reaction to Steve’s intervention begins to turn negative, Rogers looks to an old friend for some advice. The situation only becomes darker when the next part of the Power Elite’s plan is revealed.

Coates continues to tell a dark, immersive and expanding story for Captain America. All of the trials and setbacks that Steve is experiencing are told with an eye towards Steve’s enduring desire to be of service. The Power Elite is becoming a more interesting foe for Steve than HYDRA in many respects because they are using the ideals Steve holds onto as weapons against him and have found unwitting patsies to help them to do it. There’s some exciting and tense political intrigue in this story and the darker tone of this arc makes this adventure more thrilling.

Leinil Francis Yu’s art and style are perfect for this story. There is a great mixture of sharp lines and deep shadows in the art that give each panel a sense of immediacy and tension.
