The Call of Duty franchise is known for its immersive multiplayer maps and modes and because of that, the single player or story mode has been removed from the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.

Instead, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will feature a Battle Royale mode similar to current popular games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. This new game mode, titled Blackout, will drop players into a massive world where they have to fight to be the last person standing. According to reports, the developer Treyarch has developed the biggest map they’ve ever made which is reported as being 1,500 times bigger than the popular Nuketown map.

Even with the absence of a single-player story, Black Ops 4 will still include well-known locations and characters from the Call of Duty universe as well as the original Call of Duty Zombies Origins cast.

The game is also going to have a diverse series of land, sea and air vehicles available during combat along with an arsenal and equipment based on previous Black Ops titles. A PC version is coming as well based on a collaboration with Beenox and it will be optimized for Blizzard’s Battle.net service. The developers are also promising visual innovations including uncapped framerates, support for ultra-wide monitors and 4K resolution.

Treyarch co-studio head Mark Gordon said of the project; “We had to push ourselves and our tech to the absolute limits.”

We’ll see how that works out when Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is released on PC, Playstation and Xbox One October 12th.
