The Rundown: Three girls move to the country and bear witness to a horrible crime.

Jesse, Ryelyn and Haddy are traveling from Chicago to a small town in Indiana to move in with their mother and new stepfather. On their journey, Jesse tells them the story of an ogress who lures men to her hollow before killing and devouring them. After arriving at their new father’s farm with their mother, the girls are scared, but begin to like the man they call papa.

When Jesse goes downstairs in the middle of the night, she sees the aftermath of her mother murdering her stepfather and is put into the position of having to lie when questioned. A lie that eats at her as something dark and otherworldly begins to emerge from beneath the ground.

The Story: Cleveland creates a dark, mysterious and incredibly engaging story in this first issue. I love the stakes for the girls in the story and how the tension comes from their own mother. I love the supernatural elements of the story as well and how they are connected to Jesse and her growing paranoia and fear. The first issue definitely got my attention and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

The Art: Cormack delivers stunning art throughout the issue. I love the different visual styles and how Cormack is able to frame the growing menace of the mother in this issue.
