Deron GenerallyRed Sonja has languished in development hell for years and now it looks like Millennium is ready to move forward with the project with a new director.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio is negotiating with director Bryan Singer to helm the project. Singer is the director of films like The Usual Suspects, X-Men, X-Men 2, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Superman Returns and the upcoming Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
The Conan the Barbarian spin-off Red Sonja is being rewritten by Ashley Miller. Miller previously wrote the screenplay for X-Men: First Class which was produced by Singer. Millennium is hoping that the audience that turned out in force to push the Wonder Woman movie into a global phenomenon will turn up for the sword and sorcery epic and help create a new franchise for the character.
Red Sonja originally made its way to the screen in a 1985 film starring Brigitte Neilsen and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2008, Sin City director Robert Rodriguez was set to direct a big budget version of the heroine starring Rose McGowan in the title role, but the project fell apart after a huge reveal at that year’s San Diego Comic Con. It is the prevailing wisdom that bringing Singer on board might kickstart the project back into gear, but with Singer’s recent personal and professional issues, that might be a huge gamble.
