Boom! Studios Archaia imprint is set to publish an ongoing comic series devoted to the origins of Jareth the Goblin King, played with relish by David Bowie in the Jim Henson film Labyrinth. “It’s the backstory of how Jareth came to be in the Labyrinth himself,” says Lisa Henson, the daughter of Jim, and CEO and President of The Jim Henson Company. “The Goblin King, he’s not a goblin, he’s human. Many people have asked, ‘Well, how did he get there?’ So, that’s something that we thought we would explore.”

The series will be written by Simon Spurrier (The Spire) with art by Daniel Bayliss (Big Trouble in Little China/Escape from New York). The story will take place during the time Sarah is traveling through the Labyrinth to rescue her brother Toby from Jareth. In the series, Jareth will recount to Toby the circumstances that brought him to the world of the Labyrinth starting with his life with his parents in 18th Century Vienna. According to Spurrier, the series will feature the people in Jareth’s life who he loved and who loved him as well as the events that made him what he is when Sarah encounters him.

Issue #1 of Jim Henson’s Labyrinth will go on sale in February.
