To paraphrase the bard “The Winters family is discontent”. After the brutal death of Wade in the last issue, the Winters family is reeling. Garcia is sitting on top of the world as he signals to his men that there is a new shift in the balance of power in New Orleans. Shaken, but determined, Grace decides to dip into her dwindling supply of Ash to talk to her dead husband again. As the rest of the Winters siblings deal with the loss of their brother, Grace emerges with a mission for her daughter.

As Rafael and his crew celebrate the message they sent to the upstart Winters family, the family decides to tie up some loose ends and send a message to him and everyone else coming after them. A message that is both brutal and poetic.

I really loved this issue. The escalation of the action and tension as well as the internal drama from the characters made this issue resonate with me as a reader. Seeing what the Winters family will do when pushed too far is incredibly entertaining and the plot, pacing, and dialogue in this issue are all top notch. Cullen Bunn has created a gritty, cutthroat world in Bone Parish and the characters compelling. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this story as the stakes continue to be raised.

Jonas Scharf’s art in this issue is pitch perfect to the tone and sentiment of this story. There are panels that use shadow brilliantly to convey both the darkness of the moment, but also the darkness of the characters. The visual effects of Ash continue to be impressive and the juxtaposition between Scharf’s depictions of it in the finale with the brutality of the family’s vengeance make all the panels more impactful. Great read.
