Things are heating up in this new issue both personally and professionally for the Winters family. Grace decides to spend some time with Simon, the man who recently tried to purchase her operation. Brigitte decides to use some of her own supply of ash to determine what secret Lucien was trying to unlock when she discovers a side effect she hadn’t expected. Brae is trying to make sure that the new ash dealers are doing their jobs.

While the Winter family is distracted, one of the warnings that Simon gave starts to come true with the detectives who have been paid to look the other way find themselves face to face with a cartel that wants to take over the entire business and they want it without paying. Things come to a head when one of the extraction teams gets hit by the cartel and they decide to make an example of one of Grace’s children.

I really loved this issue. Not only does Bunn increase the tension in this issue, but the story transitions from the deeper mystery to a bigger story really well. Adding action to this issue really helps to relay that things are getting more dangerous for the family and their business. That danger, which was alluded to, adds another dramatic element to an already interesting and dense story.

Scharf does some excellent work with the art in this issue. Both the details and the use of shadow help to create a chilling and dark environment where the reader doesn’t know what will happen next. I continue to be invested in this story and I really want to see how it evolves with these new threats being introduced.
