Superhero films have always fought an uphill battle for respect in the industry and it looks like one has finally broken through.

The Academy Awards nominations have been announced and Marvel Studios’ Black Panther got seven nominations including Best Picture.

This is the first time a superhero film has been nominated for that honor. Most superhero and popular films usually find themselves relegated to special effects and sound, but the Black Panther nomination might be a sign that the Academy is becoming more inclusive in regards to different genres of films being worthy of consideration.

Guillermo Del Toro’s sci-fi romance The Shape of Water and Peter Jackson’s epic fantasy The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King are the only other examples of genre style films being recognized by the Academy in that prestigious category. Black Panther is the first superhero movie to be nominated.

The announcement also comes on the heels of the Academy shelving an idea of having a “popular film” category, which many believed would be used to honor a film like Black Panther without it having to be considered for the Best Picture prize.

Black Panther is also nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Original Score and Original Song.
