Another DC Universe series on the CW is about to have its swan song with the news that breakout series Black Lightning will be ending at the end of season four.

The news broke on Deadline and other outlets that the upcoming fourth season will be the last of the adventures of Jefferson Pierce and family after the announcement that a spinoff series focused on the character Painkiller is in the works for the network. Black Lightning will join the departing Supergirl as her final season is starting as well.

Executive Producer and showrunner Salim Akil released a statement saying; “When we first started the Black Lighting journey, I knew that Jefferson Pierce and his family of powerful Black women would be a unique addition to the superhero genre,” The love that Blerds and all comic book fans around the globe have shown this series over the past three seasons proved what we imagined: Black people want to see themselves in all their complexities.”

“Thank you to the phenomenal cast, writers and crew without whom none of this would’ve been possible. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve been able to do and the moments we’ve been able to create in bringing DC’s first African-American family of super heroes to life for the culture.”

Black Lightning creator Tony Isabella took to Twitter to express his feelings about the end of the series as well.
