The Rundown: The warrior known as the Mongrel King is injured in a strange new land and will discover that finding his way home will be harder than he thought.

Injured and unable to communicate with the strange man in front of him, the Mongrel King decides to let the man help him with his injuries. The homeless man takes the warrior to his camp and treats his wounds with a cobbled together first aid kit, but is still unable to communicate with the stranger. Not knowing what else to do, he lets the man sleep in his camp as night overtakes the woods outside the city.

The next day, the homeless man takes the warrior into the city in disguise to show him the ropes. They search for and find food together but their inability to communicate makes the warrior’s situation even more fraught as he finds himself alone in a city of wonders he has never experienced before.

The Story: This issue is primarily focused on the lack of communication the warrior has with the man trying to help and how those issues will affect the way he tackles the new world he finds himself in. How he survives the city and its perils is something Jeff Lemire is layering into this interesting and engaging story. While neither man can communicate with the other, Lemire is able to make the story work between the two of them and brings the reader into their shared frustration. It’s a good read that makes me interested in where the story goes next.

The Art: Mike Deodato Jr. delivers some amazing art in this issue. All of the detailed panels are a work of art in and of themselves. I love the visual style of this series and this issue especially.
