The Rundown: A lone warrior forged in tragedy will find himself alone in a new and hostile world.

The Mongrel King walks the desert wastes on his way home to his wife and child. He has fought many battles and is one of the most fearsome warriors in the world to anyone who has been on the wrong side of his blade. Unfortunately, it all means nothing when he sees smoke off in the distance.

Finding his village the scene of a violent massacre, the warrior stands before the forces responsible and proceeds to slaughter them the way they slaughtered his family. When he takes a potentially fatal hit during battle, he retreats to a cave where magic transports him to a new and dangerous world.

The Story: Jeff Lemire creates an interesting and compelling story with this first issue. The concept is great and Lemire plots it skillfully by introducing the character, his tragedy and his potential foe. The story moves at a great pace and there isn’t a single moment in the issue that felt forced or wasted as the story unfolds. There is a lot going on in the issue, but the story is so tight that your focus is always on something interesting.

The Art: Mike Deodato Jr masters the art in this issue. There are some truly beautiful visuals in this issue and the battle were both visceral and beautifully composed. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this character and the story.
