The Rundown: Barbara Gordon’s retirement party sets the stage for a dramatic change in Neo Gotham’s police operations. Meanwhile, Terry searches for an ally.

In the opener, Barbara Gordon paints a bleak view of Neo Gotham. Later, at her retirement celebration, she is greeted by Donovan Lumos and an array of guests. Soon Terry shows up in disguise as part of his investigation and listens in on the conversations of Gotham’s elite. Then, Barbara delivers an impassioned speech that is followed by a shocking announcement by from Lumos. Afterwards, Terry meets Beam Booma and the two have a surprising interaction. Sometime later, Batman enters the mayor’s home and makes a discovery. Finally, he engages in combat against a deadly enemy.

The Story: Kelly and Lanzing create an exciting narrative filled with intensity. Now that the setup is complete, I am ready to just follow along for the ride. There are so many good things happening in this episode, but I’m most excited by the budding relationship between Terry and Beam. Their chemistry is remarkable, and I can’t wait for a crime fighting team up. I am also curious as to whether or not Barbara will have an active role to play or if her tenure serves as a changing of the guard. The cliff hanger ending was well done and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

The Art: Stunning colors and detailed drawings make up the artwork in this good-looking issue. I was especially drawn to the stylized character design that works well with the idea of a futuristic Gotham and a young and modern Batman.
