The Rundown: Bruce Wayne is rebuilding Gotham to honor a fallen friend, but a cadre of villains have their own plans.

BATMAN-86-1

In the aftermath of the City of Bane, Bruce Wayne has some ambitious plans for Gotham City. Plans that are inspired by Alfred. With the city growing at a pace no one can believe, Batman knows he will have his hands full keeping the city safe. A task that will become harder when Cheshire, Malcolm Merlyn, and others converge in the city to begin a plan under the control of Deathstroke.

With Selina working a party for Bruce in order to locate a potential threat, Lucius and Bruce bring online a new creation that Batman will use to show the villains that he is more prepared than ever to deal with them. Unfortunately, even with his new toys, Batman can’t plan for everything.

The Story: James Tynion IV brings on a big, bold new direction for the Dark Knight with this issue and showcases a new Batman going forward. Even with all of the action and intrigue, the story takes time to deal with the new reality in Bruce’s life and the tragedy he still hasn’t come to grips with. Tynion IV also reminds the reader that Batman is still a master detective and strategist with the deeply satisfying way he takes on Deathstroke and his crew. This is a great beginning to what looks like an intense and thought provoking arc.

The Art: Tony S Daniel’s art in this issue is sublime with its rich details and remarkable pacing. There are so many great character moments throughout and Daniel showcases the characters brilliantly. From the first shot of Batman crouched in the rain with the robust Gotham City behind him to the aftermath of his encounter with Deathstroke, there is a brutal beauty to every panel.
