A personal tragedy befalls Oswald Cobblepot as he is being processed back into Arkham Asylum. When he is released, he must deal with the plans for a funeral as he is given a new assignment by Bane. One that will put him in the crosshairs of Batman.

As Penguin and his men prepare for their mission to take out Alfred as a punishment for Bruce Wayne’s intervention in the Mr. Freeze case, the butler himself is tending to his duties in the Batcave as Batman prepares to go out. When Gordon gives Batman a lead on another woman who died the same way as the victim in the Freeze case, he hones in on Penguin himself and the two prepare for a confrontation.

This issue ends on an amazingly tense, dramatic note and the last two pages are amazing to read. Tom King brings the reader back to the arc that has been building since the wedding issue and it looks like the long-term plans of Bane are designed to hit Batman emotionally. There is a lot of behind the scenes maneuvering in this story and I like how all of the different plot points come together.

Mikel Janin has some great art in this issue and some of the best moments in it are the ones with Penguin bathed in shadow denoting his grief. An interesting issue from start to finish and worth reading.
