The latest incarnation of the Starbrand has found a host and bonded with it. Unfortunately, it is a pregnant woman from Kansas who finds herself in the middle of an intergalactic tug of war with her unborn child in the middle. Between Gladiator and the Heralds of Galactus, the Avengers fight together to protect the mother who is having the mother of all contractions.

With her life and that of her unborn child in the balance, the Avengers protect her as Captain America prepares to deliver the baby in the middle of the battle. The ordeal seems to have an effect on Silver Surfer who turns on his fellow heralds to protect the new life about to be born and a new potential threat unleashed.

The Story: Jason Aaron adds some emotional stakes to this story as the cosmic ones continue to take shape. The story is filled with great character moments and action and the jump in time to give the Starbrand a backstory was well done. This issue subtly hints at some current social issues, but Aaron does so in a way that highlights the issue, but doesn’t take away from the story. This issue opens the door for some really interesting and new types of stories to tell in the future and the final cliffhanger is well executed.

The Art: McGuinness and Manna deliver some beautiful visuals in this issue. There are some great moments and panels throughout and the fight scenes and action are beautiful to look at.
