The Rundown: A prison break will send the Avengers into deep space and what could be their last mission.

There’s been a prison break in the Shi’ar empire and Gladiator suspects that the threat originated elsewhere. Back on Earth, the Avengers gather to head to space to investigate. With Black Panther searching for Iron Man, Black Widow joins the team on the mission.

The story then jumps to days later and the team separated and in more danger as the Brood attacks and a search for help brings back a bigger threat to the Avengers than the vacuum of space.

The Story: Jason Aaron crafts an awesome story in this issue and I love the drama and tension of both the time jump and the fact that the reader is thrust into the action as the Avengers fight to survive. The dialogue is crisp and immediate like the rest of the story and everything works to bring the reader in and engage. I wanted to see more of the Tony Stark subplot and was a little disappointed that it was reduced to a throwaway line, but I have faith that Aaron will connect the dots of these plot points together into something interesting and entertaining. Having the Brood as a major threat in this issue was inspired and I thought both Thor and She-Hulk have awesome side stories in this issue as well.

The Art: Ed McGuinness’ art is fantastic. I absolutely love the way he draws these characters and there is so much detail in every panel. Every page is gorgeous and the Brood are remarkably menacing to see on the page. Reading this issue, I thought the art couldn’t get any better, but McGuinness ends this issue with a shot that got me just as excited as the first panel. Truly amazing art in this issue.
