Deron GenerallyThe comic book world continues to expand across different media with a new announcement.
According to Deadline, FremantleMedia North America has acquired to the rights to superhero comic book series Astro City with plans to develop it into a live action television series. FremantleMedia is currently the producers of the Starz series American Gods, based on the book by Neil Gaiman.
Astro City was created by Kurt Busiek along with artists Brent Anderson and Alex Ross. It tells multiple stories featuring multiple heroes in the fictional Astro City and has been in publication since 1995 first with Image Comics and currently with DC Comics. Astro City consists of the largest number of superheroes in one place and the series deals with the day-to-day struggles of both its powered and non-powered citizens as they deal with daily life and earth shattering disasters that are beyond their control.
In a rare instance in the comic book industry, even though the comic is published by DC Comics which is owned by Warner Brothers, Kurt Buseik owns all the rights to Astro City. Busiek released a statement regarding the new series.
“It’s a thrill to be working with Rick, Gregory and FremantleMendia on this,” he said. “Everyone, at every turn, is supportive, helpful and completely focused on capturing the feel of Astro City and bringing it to life as a TV show.”
Busiek will also write the pilot episode with Rick Alexander with Gregory Noveck serving as executive producer.
