The Rundown: Bickering twins find a portal that takes them straight to the Twilight Zone.
Chet and Laura are twin brother and sister who are on vacation on a house boat with Laura’s husband who has spent years sitting on the sidelines as the two constantly argue about how Chet live his life. The three discover the house boat has an internal entry point for diving directly into the water and as the siblings continue to argue the next day, Laura’s husband Gabe decides to dive in on his own.
Laura decides to follow him and the pair emerge back on the houseboat but things are different. Chet dives in and emerges in another world filled with people like him. As the truth dawns on the both of them, the siblings must find a way to escape worlds they cannot understand.
The Story: I really wanted to like this story. Conceptually, it reminds me of some classic Twilight Zone stories that I enjoyed, but the execution was lacking. Laura and Chet are more like caricatures than people and I didn’t particularly care about them one way or another. Gabe is a blank slate who only barely moves the plot along. The stakes are so achingly low that nothing that happens to these characters once they enter the water seems to mean anything once they surface and there’s no external or implied threat that should drive them to escape. The story meanders with no real direction or purpose.
The Art: Powell creates some great visuals with the characters. I like the visual aesthetic of the story, but shadow people and dark words don’t invoke chills or scares unless there is something there to create them.
