The Rundown: Steve Rogers accepts a new assignment but has his doubts.

After Doom disappeared, tensions throughout the world are rising and the future of Latveria is on the minds of the military, especially Doom’s advanced weapons. Steve Rogers is trying to find some peace in his life with Sharon, but there is something looming over his head and a fight in a bar with lobbyists wanting a new dictator to support will give him some clarity.

After being bailed out of jail by Tony Stark, Steve is approached by Nick Fury who is trying to rebuild SHIELD with a mission to Latveria and General Ross who has been returned to duty with the government. Steve will have to decide who to follow and that decision will bring him face to face with Red Hulk on his first mission.

The Story: Zdarsky crafts an entertaining and engaging story in this issue. I like seeing Steve deal with personal doubt both in his relationship with Sharon and in his purpose. I like that he takes a stand in the bar and deals with the consequences of it. I like that he is untrusting of everyone’s motivations and how they want to use him as a symbol in their agendas. This is a grown up Steve Rogers who is filled with nuance and agency and I really enjoyed seeing that in this issue.

The Art: Diaz and Alpizar create some beautifully detailed art that emphasizes character over spectacle. The character designs look great and the Red Hulk introduction at the end of the issue looks fantastic.
