The Rundown: A warlord discovers a power he couldn’t dream of on his latest conquest.
A battle rages to take control of an outpost and the warlord in charge is confronted by the priest who rules over the location. A priest who warns him of the power he has at his disposal and the danger he faces if he continues his conquest.
As his men move in, they discover that they are facing warriors using weapons they never imagined. Weapons that the warlord wants for himself. As he has the priest brought to him, the two journey deep into the outpost and discover a lost history that will change the man forever.
The Story: I know what Stokoe is going for with this story. As a Twilight Zone fan, there are definite parallels to “The Old Man in the Cave” episode starring James Coburn. Unfortunately, the story never rises to that level of suspense or storytelling. The characters throwing out slogans was a dead giveaway of what the reader can expect from the twist in the story and pacing wise, the story took too long to not only get on its feet, but to also stick the landing. I was looking for dramatic irony and got lukewarm satire instead.
The Art: Stokoe delivers great art in the issue. The visuals are fun and beautifully detailed and one of the only saving graces of the story itself.
